From Porkington Hall to The White House
the concluding part of a fascinating tale of friendship, love and loss
Last week I told you how a shopping trip and a rerun of an old TV show put me on the trail of a story that began in a nearby village and led to the White House.
Part one ended with the funeral of Sylvia, Lady Harlech, which was held in Oswestry Roman Catholic Church in 1967, and was attended by Jackie, Robert and Eunice Kennedy.
This week, part two.
I HAVE a mild interest in ecclesiastical architecture, and in early October, just before I started work on this piece, I went with my husband to visit a local church, St Mary the Virgin, in the village of Selattyn. It’s a brief drive from our house, and although we were unaware at the time, I later discovered that its churchyard is the resting place of Sylvia Harlech, first wife of the 5th Lord Harlech, and her daughter Alice. It’s a beautiful little church in an idyllic setting, and I posted some pictures of it on Substack Notes:
