ACTING IS a notoriously precarious profession, in which luck plays a key part. Even actors who enjoy a modicum of success must take the roles they are offered, or fight for the ones they want. Relatively few become wealthy enough to choose their projects and accept only work that interests them. Elizabeth Taylor was one of those few, and it is noticeable that at the time of her marriage to Richard Burton, when she had reached the pinnacle of wealth and fame, she did some of her most interesting work.
